Habs watch
Habs fans get a quiet spot in this NHL recap: the Canadiens were off Monday after their 6-5 overtime loss in Pittsburgh on Saturday. They play their first home game of the season tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 6, against the Carolina Hurricanes at 7 p.m. ET at the Bell Centre. According to ESPN’s game preview, defenceman Alexandre Carrier and forward Oliver Kapanen are day-to-day, and defenceman Kaiden Guhle is out with a groin injury. Follow every game on our Canadiens page.
Senators 4, Bruins 1
Ottawa’s win leads this NHL recap for good reason. Tim Stützle needed less than two minutes to put this one out of reach. With Ottawa killing a penalty, Michael Amadio intercepted a pass and set up a 2-on-1, and Stützle snapped a one-timer high to the stick side for a short-handed goal at 7:39 of the first period. He scored again 1:43 later, stealing another pass, missing on his first try from the left circle, then getting his own rebound and beating Jeremy Swayman short side, according to NHL.com.
Drake Batherson made it 3-0 at 1:06 of the second period with a backhand on a breakaway after Stützle forced a turnover, and Amadio scored at 5:19 after a no-look feed from Shane Pinto. Stützle finished with two goals and an assist, and Amadio had a goal and an assist. Boston went 0-for-4 on the power play and is 0-for-10 through four games, while Swayman made 20 saves on 24 shots.
The scare for Ottawa came in goal. Linus Ullmark stopped all 10 shots he faced, then did not come out for the third period after colliding with Boston’s JJ Peterka in the crease late in the second. “He kind of tweaked something, a little bit. So, precautionary,” coach Travis Green said, per NHL.com. Samuel Ersson, acquired from Toronto on June 26, made his Senators debut and stopped 8 of 9 shots. The lone Bruins goal was James Hagens’ at 3:30 of the third, when his pass toward the net deflected in off Ersson.
Stützle’s two goals took him to 151 for his career, which made him the fourth German player to reach 150, joining Leon Draisaitl, Marco Sturm and Jochen Hecht. Ullmark became the first Senators goalie to win the team’s first two games of a season since Craig Anderson in 2016-17. Ottawa is 2-0-0, Boston is 2-2-0, and Boston was without defenceman Charlie McAvoy, who served the fourth game of a six-game suspension. The Senators play at Detroit tonight.

Jets 3, Penguins 2
The best finish in this NHL recap belonged to Winnipeg. Pittsburgh looked like the better team for 40 minutes, and then the third period flipped. Ben Kindel opened the scoring at 9:27 of the second, redirecting a Declan Carlile pass at the net front. The goal was first waved off for a high stick before a review showed Kindel’s stick was not above the crossbar. Winnipeg answered with three goals in 4:19: Alex Iafallo tied it at 4:43 of the third from below the goal line, and Adam Lowry made it 2-1 at 7:08 with a backhand on a loose puck in the crease.
Carlile tied it again at 8:53 from the slot, but the Penguins had barely finished celebrating. Nine seconds later, Cole Perfetti one-timed a Josh Morrissey pass from the high slot, and that was the winner. Clay Stevenson stopped 30 of 32 shots in his Jets debut, in the same rink where he played his first NHL game, after Winnipeg claimed him off waivers from Washington on Sept. 28. Sergei Murashov made 31 saves on 34 shots for Pittsburgh, and the Jets outshot the Penguins 34-32.
“That was a mental game more than it was a physical one,” Jets coach Scott Arniel said, per NHL.com. Winnipeg is 2-0-1 after winning in Detroit on Sunday. Pittsburgh dropped to 2-1-0 for its first loss of the season after outscoring opponents 13-5 in its first two games. Perfetti has five points in three games, and Kindel, who is 19, became the third teenager in the past 30 years to score in consecutive games more than once, joining Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal. The Jets host Colorado on Wednesday.

NHL recap: the rest of Monday
Lightning 4, Flyers 1
Tampa Bay outshot Philadelphia 36-14 and pulled away late. Brayden Point redirected a John Carlson shot at 16:05 of the first period, Pontus Holmberg made it 2-0 just 17 seconds into the second on a rush shot that beat Dan Vladar on the glove side, and Tyson Foerster cut it to 2-1 at 7:22 when his shot deflected in off Charle-Edouard D’Astous’ stick. Ilya Mikheyev restored the two-goal lead at 17:00 of the third with a backhand wraparound, his first goal as a Lightning, and Brandon Hagel scored into an empty net at 19:53, per NHL.com.
Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 13 of 14 shots for his 372nd career win, which tied Andy Moog for 20th all time. Vladar made 32 saves on 35 shots for Philadelphia. The Flyers fell to 0-2-2 and have opened with four straight losses for the first time since 2014-15, and defenceman Rasmus Ristolainen was a late scratch after leaving Saturday’s game with an undisclosed injury. “What I really like is that our next two have been pretty darn good,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said of his team’s bounce-back after a 5-1 loss to the Rangers in the opener. Tampa Bay is 2-1-0 with two straight wins.

Stars 5, Sharks 0
Dallas collected its first win of the season in style, and it is the last result in this NHL recap. Miro Heiskanen scored with 69 seconds left in the first period, banking a backhand off San Jose defenceman Dmitry Orlov and goalie Yaroslav Askarov, and Joel Kiviranta made it 2-0 at 3:17 of the second. Jamie Benn followed at 6:19 on a between-the-legs touch pass from Jason Robertson, Robertson scored on a blocker-side wrist shot at 16:30, and Mikko Rantanen added a wrist shot from the left circle at 15:22 of the third, according to NHL.com.
Benn, Robertson and Rantanen each scored their first goal of the season. Jake Oettinger turned aside every shot he faced for his 17th career shutout and the first of this season, while Askarov stopped 21 of 26. “Anytime you get a shutout in the NHL it’s fun,” Oettinger said. Dallas is 1-2-0 and has not lost to San Jose in 10 games (9-0-1). The Sharks, 2-1-0, played without captain Macklin Celebrini, a late scratch with a lower-body injury who was still being evaluated. Dallas visits Buffalo on Thursday, and San Jose is at St. Louis on Wednesday.
