Red Wings Name Shawn Horcoff Interim GM, Continue Search for Hockey Operations Lead – The Hockey Writers – Detroit Red Wings

On Tuesday, the Detroit Red Wings named Shawn Horcoff as the franchise’s interim general manager, elevating the longtime executive to succeed Steve Yzerman – at least temporarily.

Horcoff, 47, joined the Red Wings in 2016 and has served as the assistant GM since 2022. He has also overseen the Grand Rapids Griffins since 2022, serving as their general manager.

His interim promotion provides continuity for an organization that has spent the past several years rebuilding its prospect pipeline and NHL roster.

Horcoff Ready to Take Action with Red Wings

A former NHL forward, Horcoff appeared in more than 1,000 regular-season games with the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, and Anaheim Ducks. Following his playing career, he immediately transitioned into a management role, joining the Red Wings initially as their director of player development.

His familiarity with Detroit’s personnel, prospects, and long-term vision will enable the organization to move forward in the near future:

“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity,” said Chris Ilitch in Detroit’s press release. “His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.”

The Red Wings become the latest NHL franchise to promote from within, placing one of their top executives in charge of hockey operations. Horcoff now assumes responsibility for day-to-day roster decisions, salary cap, and hockey operations personnel.

As the organization turns the page on the Yzerman era, Horcoff begins his tenure with the expectation of building on the foundation already in place while guiding the Red Wings back into playoff contention.

As noted in the press release, Detroit will continue their search for a full-time hockey operations lead. Horcoff is one of the contenders and now has the opportunity to make decisions that can aid his case to remove the interim tag, including a contract extension for Simon Edvinsson.
