Montreal Canadiens make statement with coaching decision
The NHL’s Montreal Canadiens are making it clear that head coach Martin St. Louis remains a major part of their plans, signing him to a multi-year contract extension on Monday. The new deal will keep St. Louis behind the Canadiens’ bench through the 2029-30 season.
The decision represents a significant vote of confidence in St. Louis and his ability to guide Montreal‘s young roster. Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes praised the coach’s work in a statement, saying, “Marty has done a terrific job leading our young team.”

Hughes added that the organization looks forward to St. Louis’ continued efforts to “mold this group into a championship-caliber team.”

St. Louis has guided Montreal to back-to-back playoff appearances, helping establish the Canadiens as an emerging contender in the Eastern Conference. Last season, Montreal advanced all the way to the Eastern Conference Final before falling in five games to the Carolina Hurricanes, who went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Since taking over behind the bench, St. Louis has compiled a 163-155-47 regular-season record with Montreal. He is 10-14 in the postseason.
The 51-year-old Laval, Quebec native initially joined the Canadiens as interim head coach in February 2022 following the dismissal of Dominique Ducharme. His strong connection with the organization and ability to develop young players have now earned him a long-term commitment.

St. Louis brings an impressive résumé to his coaching position. Before becoming a coach, he enjoyed a remarkable 16-year NHL playing career, recording more than 1,000 points and winning the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004.
His accomplishments were recognized when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.
Now, St. Louis will have several more seasons to continue building Montreal into a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. The Canadiens are entering the 2026-27 campaign with growing expectations following their recent playoff success.
Montreal will open the regular season on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 29. With St. Louis now locked in through 2030, the Canadiens have made their intentions clear: they believe he is the coach capable of taking their young core to the next level.
