Maple Leafs fire coach Berube — The Fourth Period
The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired head coach Craig Berube and will begin their search for a new bench boss immediately.
“Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person,” said Maple Leafs GM John Chayka. “This decision is more reflective of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig. We are grateful for his leadership, professionalism and commitment to the Maple Leafs organization and wish Craig and his family nothing but the best moving forward.”
The club’s next head coach will determine the fates of the remainder of the coaching staff.
Berube, 60, was hired as Leafs head coach on May 17, 2024. He guided the team to a 52-26-4 record and a second-round appearance in the playoffs, losing to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in seven games.
This season, however, the Leafs finished fifth-last in the NHL with a 32-34-16 record, prompting a change at the coaching position.
