Leafs GM search picks up this week — The Fourth Period
The Toronto Maple Leafs are entering the next phase of their GM search, with more interviews on the docket this week.
Several candidates have entered the mix for Toronto’s vacancy, with various reports linking the likes of Mike Gillis, John Chayka, Marc Bergevin, Kevyn Adams, Ryan Bowness, Tom Fitzgerald, Scott White, Ryan Martin, Jamie Langenbrunner and others as possible suitors to run the Leafs’ hockey department.
During Monday’s episode of “32 Thoughts,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported White, who is an assistant GM with the Dallas Stars, is in the running for the position.
“I have thought, for some time, that he would get a chance,” Friedman said. “Scott White is not a guy who walks into a room and dominates it, but he’s a bright guy. He’s one of those guys who’s kind of that jack of all trades; he’s done a bunch of different teams.”
White was with the Stars in Toronto last week when they beat the Leafs 6-5 in Toronto’s final home game of the season and presumably met with the Maple Leafs search committee then.
“He is the kind of person who I expected would be on Toronto’s radar and I’m under the impression they did interview him last week,” Friedman said.
TFP’s David Pagnotta reported over the weekend on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio that the Leafs spoke with Gillis at least twice to this point, while others in the running also remain in the mix for the job.
Reports also surfaced late last week that former Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin may rejoin the franchise in a managerial position, though not the GM post.
