Larkin asks Red Wings for trade — The Fourth Period
The Detroit Red Wings have struggled to make the playoffs year after year lately and while GM Steve Yzerman is expected to add to his team this off-season, he’s going to lose one of his top players.
Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has been frustrated by his team’s inability to make the post-season, something he has voiced publicly before, and that frustration has boiled over into a trade request.
As first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Larkin has requested a trade and clearly wants to move on to the next chapter of his career.
Larkin, who turns 30 on July 30, is entering the fourth year of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract. He owns a full no-trade clause and will dictate where he ends up, once dealt.
According to TFP’s David Pagnotta, Larkin’s camp informed the Red Wings of his request for a trade shortly after the season ended. Teams already believed to have interest in Larkin include the Minnesota Wild, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks.
Larkin has played in 808 career NHL regular-season games with the Wings, making the playoffs in just his rookie season.
This season, Larkin registered a career-high 34 goals to go along with 33 assists to tally 67 points.
