Carey Price identifies the special traits in Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler
Carey Price is considered one of the best goalies in Montreal Canadiens’ history, but sees something in both of the current goalies that one day could have them join him in that conversation. Recently, Price did an interview with Dave Stubbs at NHL.com and talked about how Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler are different.
““They’re a little bit different,” he said, comparing Dobes and Fowler. “I really love Dobes’ compete level, he’s got that ‘grrr’ in his game, he’s got that swagger. I really enjoy watching that. Fowler kind of reminds me more of myself, a little more reserved. He plays a very quiet game like I did. It’s their mentality that has them where they’re at.””
For anyone who watched Dobes’ last season certainly saw that swagger in his game. He took over midway through the season as the starter and, in his rookie season, would go 29-10-4 in the regular season and was named first-team All-Rookie.
However, with any inexperienced player, it is a bit unknown how they will respond in the playoffs. The moment never felt too big for Dobes, who started all 19 games for Montreal. He delivered some big-time performances for the Canadiens, especially when their offense was struggling at times, like in the series against the Lightning.
That is why it made perfect sense for the Canadiens to extend Dobes this offseason with a three-year deal.
Is Jacob Fowler the future for the Montreal Canadiens?
As good as Dobes was this past season, he isn’t guaranteed to remain the starter with Jacob Fowler on the roster. He is arguably the best goalie prospect in the NHL and was ranked as such this summer.
He got a taste of the NHL last season, going 9-7-2 and was the backup to Dobes during the playoffs. However, with Samuel Montembeault still on the Canadiens, it isn’t clear if he will begin with Montreal or head back to Laval to continue to get regular ice time.
The Montreal Canadiens have a good problem that should be the envy of the rest of the league, with two goalies who have already shown they can deliver. Carey Price certainly has seen it, and it is only a matter of time before the rest of the NHL catches up.
