Canadiens Have Extension Candidate To Watch In Surging Forward

The Montreal Canadiens have multiple players entering the 2026-27 season as pending free agents.

Among the Canadiens’ pending free agents is forward Alex Newhook. The 25-year-old forward is entering the final season of his four-year, $11.6 million contract and can be a restricted free agent next summer.

However, with how well Newhook played last season, it would make a lot of sense for the Canadiens to try to sign him to a contract extension before next off-season.

Newhook is coming off a very solid 2025-26 season with the Canadiens. While he was limited to only 42 regular-season games, he recorded 13 goals and 25 points. He also made an impact during the playoffs, as he posted seven goals and 10 points in 19 games.

With this, it would be understandable if the Canadiens worked hard to sign Newhook to a contract extension. The 2019 first-round pick still has the potential to improve further and is young enough where the Canadiens could sign him to a multi-year deal without much risk.
