Canadiens Have PTO Target Worth Considering In Veteran Winger

The Montreal Canadiens have not signed any players to a professional tryout (PTO) agreement at this point in the off-season.

Yet, with training camps getting closer, it would not be too surprising if they invited at least one free agent to their training camp on a PTO.

When looking the remaining free agents at this point in the off-season, the Canadiens have an interesting one worth considering in James van Riemsdyk.

If the Canadiens signed van Riemsdyk to a PTO, he would create more competition at their training camp, which is never a bad thing. Although the 37-year-old winger is not a top-six forward anymore, he can still produce some offense. Due to this, there would be no harm in the Canadiens seeing what he can do on a PTO.

If van Riemsdyk earned a contract for the season with the Canadiens, he could work well in their bottom six or as an extra forward for when injuries arise.

In 72 games last season for the Detroit Red Wings, JVR posted 15 goals and 31 points. This was after he had 16 goals and 36 points in 71 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets during the 2024-25 season.
