3 Takeaways From Devils’ 5-4 Rookie Showcase Loss to Islanders – The Hockey Writers – New Jersey Devils

On Sunday, Sept. 13, the New Jersey Devils opened their Rookie Showcase at Prudential Center, facing off against the New York Islanders. Rookies had only one day of practice on Saturday ahead of their first matchup, with the second game slated for Tuesday night at Northwell Health Ice Center.

The afternoon showdown resulted in a 5-4 overtime win for the Islanders.

Anton Silaev Has Arrived

The wait to see Anton Silaev in black and red is finally over. The 6-foot-7 Russian defenseman made a splash during practice over the weekend, turning heads with both his size and skill. In conversation with the media yesterday, he revealed that he’s spent the last two weeks in North America, getting acclimated with the assistance of his mentor, Arseny Gritsyuk.

As the only first-round draft pick at camp, expectations for him were higher than ever, but Silaev has looked sharp so far. Working alongside Seamus Casey, the two skated on the top pairing like seasoned pros, finding instant chemistry together.

It all started in the first period, where Silaev received an early look on the penalty kill, clearing the puck and using his massive frame to guard the net. But the biggest quality that makes him stand out is his skating. His movements across all three zones looked smooth and effortless, despite having to adapt to a smaller rink size than what he’s used to in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

He recorded multiple shots on goal in all three periods, showcasing a strong netfront presence. But Silaev also made his physicality abundantly clear, landing a heavy hit on Islanders’ Tomas Poletin. 

Offensive Pressure Was Rewarded

The first period might have been scoreless, but it featured plenty of chances for the Devils. Among the first was Lenni Hameenaho, who came within inches of getting the puck past Joshua Kotai. Ben Steeves and Josh Filmon also generated plenty of scoring opportunities.

In spite of their early offensive zone strength, the Devils fell behind at the start of the second period. The Islanders took a 1-0 lead at the 5:56 mark, courtesy of Daniil Prokhorov.

The Devils’ tenacity was undeniable in pursuit of their first goal, and their efforts were rewarded at the end of the second. With five minutes remaining, Mikael Diotte scored the equalizer on a pass from Matyas Melovsky. They took their first lead of the afternoon 41 seconds later, on a snap shot from Luke Wilfley. 

The home team fell behind once more in the third, after Prokhorov tied the game at two. On their second power play, the Islanders made it a 3-2 game after Victor Eklund beat Jakub Malek’s blocker.

But Melovsky was the hero of the third period, scoring two goals with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Devils created consistent offensive pressure, which helped pull them out of a deficit twice.

Prospect Pool Looks Promising

After regulation ended in a 4-4 tie, the Devils headed into overtime, but the Islanders came out on top with one minute remaining, following Cole Eiserman’s second goal of the game.

While this outcome was not what fans hoped for, the rookies still put on a strong performance — especially with only one full practice under their belts. They’ll be able to find more of a rhythm with one another as camp progresses, but the Devils’ prospect pool remains a strong suit.

A few players to watch include Silaev, Hameenaho, and Melovsky. All three showed flashes of NHL-level talent, but Melovsky went above and beyond with three points. Moving forward, fans should definitely keep an eye on the 22-year-old prospect.

The Devils will wrap up their Rookie Showcase on Tuesday at 6:00 PM (ET), looking to even the score with the Islanders.
