Wendel Clark Was More Than Just a Maple Leafs Star – The Hockey Writers – Toronto Maple Leafs

Sometimes a player’s importance to a hockey team can’t really be measured by goals and assists. Wendel Clark is a good example.

If you looked only at statistics, there were players who had longer careers, scored more goals, and put up more points. Clark’s career was interrupted by injuries, and he never had the chance to build the kind of statistical résumé that some other Toronto Maple Leafs eventually did.

But that’s not really how I think about Wendel Clark. I think about what he meant to the franchise.

Clark Arrived When Toronto Needed Him

Clark came to Toronto in 1985 as the first overall pick. The Maple Leafs weren’t exactly a model organization at the time. The team had been struggling, the atmosphere around the franchise could be pretty chaotic, and fans had very little reason to believe that better days were ahead.

Then Clark arrived. Almost immediately, something changed.

He wasn’t just a talented young player. He was tough. He was physical. He scored goals. He wasn’t afraid to stand up for his teammates. Most importantly, he played with an emotion that fans could see.

You didn’t have to look at a spreadsheet to understand Clark. You could watch him play for five minutes and know exactly what he was about. He cared, and that mattered in Toronto.

Clark Gave the Fans Something to Believe In

There is a difference between being a good player and becoming the player for a franchise. Clark became that player. He wasn’t perfect. Injuries took away games and probably took away some of the career numbers he might otherwise have produced.

But when he was on the ice, Clark gave the Maple Leafs an identity. He was the guy who would go into the corner. He was the guy who would drop the gloves. He was the guy who could score a big goal and then do something physical the next shift. There was no mystery about what he represented.

At a time when the Maple Leafs desperately needed credibility, Clark gave them plenty of it. He gave fans a reason to show up believing something might happen. That is a pretty valuable thing for a hockey player to give a franchise.

Being a Great Maple Leaf Is Different Than Being a Great Player

I’ve always thought there is a difference between being a great hockey player and being a great Maple Leaf. The first can be measured reasonably well. Look at the statistics and count the goals, assists, points, and the awards.

The second is harder. It involves leadership. Timing. Personality. The relationship between a player and a fan base. It involves whether people remember not just what you accomplished, but how you made them feel while you were doing it.

Clark’s Legacy Is That He Became Part of Toronto’s Story

That’s where Clark’s legacy becomes difficult to compare with anyone else’s. He became associated with a particular period in Maple Leafs history. He became part of the reason people believed the franchise could matter again.

Eventually, he wore the captain’s “C” as Mats Sundin and Darryl Sittler also did. For him, it was not just another line on a résumé. It was a reflection of what he had become to the organization.

As I reflect on the Maple Leafs after almost a decade of covering them, probably the best way I can explain Clark’s importance to the team is to say that he was a player who became part of the story.

Some players have great careers. Some players become stars. Then there are players who somehow become part of the story of the franchise itself. Clark was one of those players.

What Maple Leafs Fans Will Remember About Clark

Years from now, people may remember his goals. They’ll remember the fights. They’ll remember the injuries and the comebacks. They’ll remember the playoff moments. But I suspect they’ll remember something else, too.

They’ll remember what it felt like when Clark was a Maple Leaf. Maybe that’s the hardest thing to measure in professional sports.

A player can give you goals. A player can give you wins. But every once in a while, a player gives a franchise an identity. Wendel Clark did that for the Maple Leafs. That’s why his place in Toronto hockey history is about much more than the numbers.
