Two forwards named in potential trade between the Canadiens and Penguins

Kent Hughes has an interesting trade option involving the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Several days after the opening of the NHL free agent market, that coveted winger (or second-line center) is still nowhere to be found.

But the GM isn’t slowing down.

Hughes is actively consulting with his fellow general managers in search of the right trade.

Elliotte Friedman pointed to a specific possibility on his “32 Thoughts” podcast.

Two names from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Both right wingers are reportedly available in Pittsburgh.

Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell emerge as trade options for Kent Hughes and the Canadiens

Rust is the more productive of the two.

The 34-year-old veteran is coming off a 65-point season, including 29 goals, in 72 games.

The 33-year-old winger recorded 48 points, including 24 goals, in 60 games.

Both players have two years remaining on their contracts.

Rust carries a $5,125,000 cap hit, while Rakell earns $5 million per season.

One detail could help facilitate discussions. Kyle Dubas likes acquiring former first-round picks who have yet to break out.

That opens the door to one familiar name.
