Sometimes, there are times in life when you have the biggest regret. You feel like you screwed up and you misplayed the puck, leading to the game-tying goal. Of course, the situation varies, ranging from who you marry to what you eat.
But this also applies to the Vegas Golden Knights, who’ve had plenty of regrets themselves. That comes from different places, including your head coach and players. You don’t always have the most sterling outcomes when you’re a hated NHL franchise, you know.
Believe it or not, there are plenty of fatal flaws that did the Golden Knights in. That includes regretful decisions that hurt the team, whether it’s by trade or by choosing the wrong goaltender. I know, the charmed life isn’t so charmed when you think about it.
So, here are the three biggest regrets that plauged the Golden Knights. Yes, all three moments involve trades, whether it’s with the New Jersey Devils or the Washington Capitals (I nearly said Nationals). It’s time to express deep sorrow and see what went wrong in the Golden Knights’ history.
3.) Bruce Cassidy picks Adin Hill over Logan Thompson
Now, this is an interesting choice because of the layers behind Logan Thompson’s exit. However, the stats show that Thompson and Hill have been two different goaltenders on a drastic scale.

Cassidy’s choice of Hill over Thompson ultimately cost the Golden Knights in certain instances, such as the 2025 second-round matchup against the Edmonton Oilers. Yes, Thompson had a reputation in the locker room with some. But for some fans, this will still sting based on the two goaltenders’ trajectories.
2.) Picking up Alexander Holtz
Now, I was going to put Nolan Patrick on here. While he wasn’t productive with the Golden Knights, he also dealt with numerous unfortunate events. That included a devastating hit from Nathan MacKinnon that destroyed his career. Add in the countless headaches that he sustained throughout his career and it’s more unfortunate than regretful.
That’s why Alexander Holtz is a better alternative to this. As it stands, he only has seven goals and 14 assists during his Vegas residency. That’s a far cry from his 2023-24 campaign with the New Jersey Devils, when he scored 16 goals and 12 assists.
1.) Nick Suzuki goes to the Montreal Canadiens for Max Pacioretty
Do you know the feeling when you trade something for short-term pleasure? After that feeling comes long-term regret when you realize the mistake that you made, which is the case with the Golden Knights getting Max Pacioretty from the Montreal Canadiens. Out went Nick Suzuki, along with Tomas Tatar and a second-round pick.
But it wasn’t that Pacioretty was bad. In fact, he scored 97 goals and 97 assists during his four-year residency. Still, it was that Suzuki was simply much better, scoring 167 goals and 309 assists during his seven-year career with the Canadiens. That included an excellent 2025-26 campaign where he scored 29 goals and 72 assists (101 points).
