PM Mark Carney drops in on Canadiens during historic night
The Canadiens received a visitor in the dressing room on the night Cole Caufield scored his 50th goal of the season, and we’re not talking about captain Nick Suzuki’s dog, Ruby.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is in town for the Liberal Party’s national convention, and he took in the Canadiens game from the Bell Centre stands on Thursday night.
He also posed for photos with four of the team’s Canadian players: Suzuki, Mike Matheson, Jake Evans and Alex Newhook.
“Welcome to Montreal, Prime Minister Mark Carney,” the X post on the team’s official account read.
“Witnessed history at the Bell Centre last night,” Carney said on his Facebook account.
He also praised the game and crowd in a post on X that included a photo of him watching the game from the Bell Centre seats.
Canadiens winger Cole Caufield made history in Thursday’s 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning by becoming the seventh Hab, and first since Stéphane Richer in 1990, to reach the 50-goal plateau.
Carney is known for being an Edmonton Oilers fan, but he did manage to sport two different Canadiens hats during the evening. Carney also attended last Saturday’s Ottawa Senators game against the Minnesota Wild at the Canadian Tire Centre.
Last year, the prime minister joined the Oilers on the ice during practice.
Earlier in the day, Carney posted a video purchasing brioche for the Artemis II crew from the Terrebonne riding, which will see a hotly contested byelection on Monday.
The 2026 Liberal National Convention in Montreal ends on Saturday.
