Montreal Canadiens sign Maksymilian Szuber to one-year contract

Maksymilian Szuber, acquired from the Utah Mammoth in a trade for Joshua Roy, has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens.
The defenceman was a pending restricted free agent when he was acquired on June 29. It was his entry-level contract that came to an end on July 1, but the Coyotes seemed more interested in having an offensive winger in the organization even though the 2022 sixth-round selection of the now-defunct Arizona Coyotes is only set to turn 24 on August 25.
Szuber’s stats had been quite impressive in the AHL with the Tucson Roadrunners, with 28 points in 2023-24, 32 the next year, and then a career-high 11 goals last season. The Laval’s Rocket top goal-scoring defenceman last season was Marc Del Gaizo with nine, and only Adam Engström has more than Szuber’s 27 points.
It seems like there’s a lot of potential in Szuber’s case, something that is true from the opposite side with Utah seeing the same in Roy. Roy has signed a one-year contract with his new organization. We will see if either side ends up with a player who gets back to the NHL out of this trade.
