Mark Scheifele Trade Rumours Could Heat Up if Jets Move Connor Hellebuyck – The Hockey Writers – Winnipeg Jets
Trade speculation surrounding Connor Hellebuyck has naturally dominated headlines, but if the Winnipeg Jets ultimately decide to move their franchise goaltender, it may not stop there. A Hellebuyck trade would likely signal something much larger — a complete organizational reset — and that could put veteran centre Mark Scheifele squarely in the spotlight as one of the next marquee names available.
For years, the Jets have remained committed to keeping their veteran core together in hopes of making another Stanley Cup run. While the club has consistently been a playoff team, postseason success has been difficult to come by. If management determines the current roster has reached its ceiling, moving Hellebuyck could become the first domino in what turns into a full-scale rebuild.
Should that happen, it would be difficult to imagine Scheifele wanting to spend the latter stages of his career on a rebuilding team. At 33 years old, the veteran centre still has plenty left in the tank and would almost certainly prefer chasing another Stanley Cup rather than helping guide a young roster through several rebuilding seasons.
Canadian Contenders Could Make Sense
If Scheifele were to become available, several Canadian teams would immediately emerge as logical landing spots. The Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Montreal Canadiens all possess reasons to pursue the veteran centre, albeit for different purposes.

Edmonton stands out as perhaps the most intriguing destination. Even after addressing several roster needs this offseason, the Oilers continue searching for elite top-six talent capable of elevating their forward group. Adding Scheifele behind or alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would create one of the deepest centre groups in the NHL.
The opportunity to play with McDavid and Draisaitl would likely be extremely appealing for Scheifele as well. Few players get the chance to join two of the game’s greatest offensive talents while immediately stepping into legitimate Stanley Cup contention. His ability to drive offence, produce consistently, and play in all situations would give Edmonton another dangerous weapon during what remains their championship window.
Toronto also presents an interesting fit. While Auston Matthews remains the franchise cornerstone, the addition of Gavin McKenna has dramatically changed the organization’s long-term outlook. Pairing Scheifele with Matthews and McKenna would give the Maple Leafs tremendous centre depth while easing some of the offensive burden placed on Matthews every season.
Scheifele’s playoff experience and veteran leadership could also prove invaluable for a Toronto team that continues searching for postseason success. The pressure of playing in the Canadian market is immense, but Scheifele has spent his entire career under the microscope in Winnipeg and understands what comes with representing a passionate hockey market.
Montreal Could Offer a Different Opportunity
Although Montreal may not immediately be viewed as the obvious destination, the Canadiens represent another fascinating possibility should they continue their upward trajectory.
The Canadiens have assembled one of the NHL’s most exciting young cores and appear positioned to become legitimate contenders over the next several seasons. Adding an established veteran like Scheifele would accelerate that timeline while giving Montreal another proven offensive producer capable of mentoring its emerging stars.
Rather than joining an aging contender, Scheifele would become part of a young, exciting group with the potential to compete for years to come. His experience would be invaluable in helping guide Montreal’s next generation through meaningful playoff hockey.
While the Canadiens may not offer the immediate championship odds of Edmonton or Toronto, they provide something equally attractive — a chance to help lead one of hockey’s most historic franchises back into Stanley Cup contention.
What Scheifele Would Bring
Regardless of where he lands, Scheifele would instantly improve virtually any contender.
He continues to produce offensively at an elite level, possesses outstanding hockey IQ, and remains one of the league’s better playmaking centres. His vision with the puck, ability to create offence off the rush, and finishing touch around the net make him an ideal fit for teams already loaded with offensive talent.
Scheifele also brings nearly two decades of organizational leadership and significant playoff experience. While postseason results haven’t always gone Winnipeg’s way, he’s played in numerous high-pressure games and understands the adjustments required during long playoff runs.
His versatility is another attractive quality. He can play centre or shift into different offensive roles depending on team needs, contribute on both special teams, and consistently log heavy minutes against quality competition.
For Canadian contenders carrying championship expectations, adding a player of Scheifele’s caliber isn’t simply about adding points. It’s about acquiring another proven veteran capable of handling enormous pressure while producing in meaningful games.
It All Starts With Hellebuyck
Of course, this entire conversation depends on one major factor — what happens with Hellebuyck. If the Jets retain their star goaltender, the expectation would remain that Winnipeg intends to compete rather than rebuild. In that scenario, moving Scheifele becomes significantly less likely.
However, if Hellebuyck is dealt, the organization could quickly pivot toward maximizing the value of its remaining veteran stars. Kyle Connor would undoubtedly become another player generating league-wide interest. One of the NHL’s most consistent goal scorers, Connor would command an enormous return from contenders looking to add elite finishing ability.
Scheifele would naturally follow shortly behind on most teams’ trade boards. Rather than attempting a quick retool, Winnipeg could capitalize on the tremendous value of Hellebuyck, Connor, and Scheifele to replenish its prospect pool, accumulate draft picks, and build around a younger core for the future.
That approach would undoubtedly be painful in the short term but could position the franchise for long-term success.
A Story Worth Watching
For now, Scheifele remains a cornerstone of the Jets organization, and no indication has emerged suggesting he has requested a trade. However, circumstances can change quickly in today’s NHL. If Winnipeg decides moving Hellebuyck is the best path forward, speculation surrounding Scheifele will only intensify.
Teams like the Oilers, Maple Leafs, and Canadiens would almost certainly explore the possibility of acquiring a proven top-line centre who can immediately strengthen their Stanley Cup aspirations. Whether it’s the opportunity to play alongside McDavid and Draisaitl in Edmonton, Matthews and McKenna in Toronto, or help lead Montreal’s exciting young core into contention, Scheifele would have no shortage of appealing destinations should the Jets choose a different direction.
If Hellebuyck is indeed the first domino to fall, Scheifele may not be far behind, and a full rebuild in Winnipeg could reshape not only the Jets’ future but also the balance of power among Canada’s Stanley Cup contenders.
