Hischier, Devils working on contract extension — The Fourth Period
The New Jersey Devils and star centre Nico Hischier have started contract negotiations and while he cannot officially sign an extension until July 1, at the earliest, talks are trending in the right direction.
Hischier, 27, is entering the final year of his seven-year, $50.75 million contract and owns a 10-team no-trade list as part of his deal.
Devils GM Sunny Mehta and Hischier’s agent Allain Roy have been discussing the parameters of a new extension and according to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes the two sides are expected to finalize a “medium term contract extension” once the all is said and done.
Weekes added that Hischier’s next contract will carry an average annual value somewhere in between $11 million and $13 million, depending on the final term.
Several teams, including the Montreal Canadiens, have been tracking the situation in New Jersey and have made it known to the Devils that if a deal doesn’t materialize, they would like to discuss trading for him. That seems unlikely now.
In 82 games with the Devils this season, Hischier registered 28 goals and 38 assists for 66 points.
