Habs Start 5-Game Road Trip Against Predators Tonight
The Montreal Canadiens (40-21-10) are riding hot heading into their first game of a 5-game road trip against the Nashville Predators (34-29-9) on a 3-game winning streak. They will look to keep their momentum and gain some cushion in the Eastern Conference Playoff race with another win tonight. Meanwhile, the Predators lost their last game against the New Jersey Devils but were on a five-game winning streak of their own before keeping themselves right in the mix of the Western Conference race. Tonight’s game should be yet another playoff-style game as both teams look to pick up important points for their races in their respective conferences. Will the Canadiens be able to extend their winning streak to 4 games tonight?

In the first meeting of the season between these teams all the way back in October, it ended with a 3-2 overtime win by the Habs thanks to the heroics of Lane Hutson, making a late-game save to prevent an empty net goal before Cole Caufield came down the ice to tie the game with 20 seconds left in regulation. Caufield later came up clutch by getting the OT winner with 3 seconds left. It was a thrilling comeback win thanks to the two players’ heroics. Hopefully, the Canadiens won’t need those heroics to get the win in Nashville tonight, but at the same time, hopefully there will be a good amount of excitement.

In nets for the Habs, it seems like Jacob Fowler is expected to get the start for the second Saturday night in a row after his last start came a week ago against the New York Islanders in a 7-3 win. Now, that game was far from Fowler’s best game, where he made 19 saves on 22 shots, but thanks to the offence and the struggles of Ilya Sorokin at the other end, he was able to do enough to secure a win for the Canadiens. He will be looking to have a better performance tonight as he faces a team that is best known for keeping its games low-scoring. Nonetheless, Fowler has the poise and positioning to make sure that he can have a big game tonight.
It will remain to be seen if head coach Martin St. Louis decides to put the red-hot Jakub Dobes in the nets instead, but the plan seems to be Fowler in Nashville, while Dobes gets the start in Carolina on Sunday. Aside from the goaltending update, there isn’t any news on the lineup for the Habs, as St. Louis likes to keep his lineup a mystery during these playoff-style games to make it harder on their opponents to scout everyone. This is also why Fowler can’t be 100% confirmed either.

The Predators will be using their star netminder Juuse Saros, who has had an up-and-down season with them this year with his .895 save percentage and 3.11 GAA. However, the numbers have been better as of late, with a .923 save percentage and 2.52 GAA in his last 5 matchups, where he has a 4-1 record. Historically, Saros has been pretty average against the Habs, going 5-2-2 in his career with a .902 save percentage and 2.79 GAA when taking them on. With that being said, a good estimation for tonight is that the Canadiens could have 3 or 4 goals on Saros by making him move around as the league’s smallest starting netminder at 5’11.
The total for tonight’s matchup is 6.5 goals, and it is a toss-up, as if Fowler doesn’t perform up to the way he knows he can, the Predators may get more goals than expected, while the Habs should get 3 or 4 goals of their own. However, at the same time, both goaltenders can have a great game, and it can be a low-scoring affair. Nonetheless, taking the over is still a good bet given how many 7+ goal totals there have been this season. As the team that is both planted in a good playoff position and has won the last 4 meetings against the Predators, the Habs are listed as -120 road favourites. Caufield is a known threat on Saturday nights, and after having his best performance yet last Saturday, the expectations are that he’ll have another big game. He has scored 19 goals and 32 points in 20 Saturday night matchups this season. Oddsmakers have listed his odds at +130 for him to score 1+ goals against the Predators.
