Flames sign Nemec to 5-year contract — The Fourth Period
The Calgary Flames have signed restricted free agent defenceman Simon Nemec to a five-year, $36.25 million contract.
Nemec, a native of Liptovsky Mikulas, SVK, skated in 68 games for the New Jersey Devils last season, posting a career-best 26 points from 11 goals and 15 assists along with 26 penalty minutes.
The 22-year-old, who will earn an AAV of $7.25 million, represented Slovakia at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, registering two assists while skating in all six of Slovakia’s contests throughout the tournament.
Nemec is a veteran of 155 NHL games, all with New Jersey, making his debut during the 2023-24 campaign after being selected by the Devils second-overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, becoming the highest Slovakia-born defenceman ever drafted.
He was acquired by the Flames from New Jersey on June 23, 2026.
