Devils shopping goalie Markstrom — The Fourth Period
The New Jersey Devils are exploring the market and appear to be shopping goaltender Jacob Markstrom, according to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes.
On Saturday, Weekes reported that while “a deal isn’t imminent,” Devils GM Sunny Mehta is “gauging market interest from clubs” potentially interested in Markstrom.
Markstrom, 36, currently owns a full no-movement clause but that shifts to a 20-team no-trade list July 1 once his two-year extension that he signed in October kicks in. Technically, the Devils can consult with him, if they find a suitable trade, to have him waive his NMC later this month.
Several goaltenders are already believed to be available for trade, including the likes of St. Louis Blues netminder Jordan Binnington, Montreal Canadiens goalie Sam Montembeault, Columbus Blue Jackets backstop Elvis Merzlikins, and Buffalo Sabres youngster Devon Levi, among others.
In 44 games with the Devils this season, Markstrom posted a 23-19-1 record with a 3.07 goals-against-average, a .833 save percentage and one shutout.
