Cole Caufield gives Canadiens fans no reason to worry about his future
As Canadian teams look to end a Stanley Cup drought that dates back to 1993, they face a harsh reality. Some players do not want to play north of the border. Matthew Tkachuk was one of the first big dominoes to fall, asking to leave the Calgary Flames and was traded to the Florida Panthers. Then it was Quinn Hughes last season. With the Vancouver Canucks fearing they would lose him in free agency when his contract was up, they decided to trade him to the Minnesota Wild. This offseason, another Tkachuk forced a move away from a Canadian club, with Brady requesting a trade from the Ottawa Senators as he joined his brother Matthew in Florida. It is not over there, with the most recent one being three-time Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Connor Hellebuyck requesting a trade away from the Winnipeg Jets. While many Canadian teams fear losing one of their American stars, Montreal Canadiens star sniper Cole Caufield has reassured Habs fans that he is not going anywhere.
Cole Caufield loves being in Montreal
With several American stars recently leaving Canadian teams, Caufield made it clear that it is not the case for him. The Wisconsin native sat down with Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas on Wednesday for an episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast and made it very clear that his future is in Montreal. “Only speaking for myself, I think being in Montreal, if you love hockey and have a passion for it, there’s no better place or city to teach you lessons through the good and bad. You learn to embrace it throughout those bad times that there’s brighter days ahead,” said Caufield. Montreal may not be the easiest city to play in. When you are winning, the fans and media will make you feel like you are on top of the world, but when things are not going well, it can be extremely tough to avoid all the noise. Caufield has seen the highs and the lows, but that is exactly what makes playing for the Canadiens so special.
Caufield had nothing but great things to say about the city. “It’s a city where you work and you earn things. Just every night at the Bell Centre is sweet. There’s no better feeling than being out there. And the city, as a whole, like, I just love being there.” At just 25 years old, Caufield has experienced a lot in Montreal. Early in his career, he was a part of the team that lost in the Stanley Cup Final. The Canadiens then went into a rebuild and are now one of the more exciting young teams in the NHL. The way the Canadiens have gone about doing their rebuild is an added reason why Caufield sees his future in Montreal. “And you can tell, just by the guys that we have, the guys that want to be there, it’s very inspiring for our group, and it’s contagious in the way that we come to the rink every day. I really love to be there. Top to bottom, staff-wise, player-wise, it’s just really exciting. I love it there, and it’s tough to see myself somewhere else.” Maybe if the team was struggling or if there was no clear future, Caufield might have a different opinion. However, the future is bright in Montreal, and Caufield wants to be a part of it for the long haul.
