Capitals, Liljegren to explore extension? — The Fourth Period
The Washington Capitals acquired defenceman Timothy Liljegren from the San Jose Sharks ahead of last month’s trade deadline and while he played just four games with the team, the relationship may extend beyond this season.
Liljegren, who turns 27 on April 30, is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 after his two-year, $6 million contract expires at the end of June.
During Wednesday’s episode of DFO Rundown: Insider Edition, TFP’s David Pagnotta indicated that the Capitals and Liljegren’s camp are expected to discuss a contract extension at some point in the coming weeks.
“I’m told that (the Capitals) will have a conversation with Timothy Liljegren about a new contract,” Pagnotta said. “He’s a pending unrestricted free agent. They’re going to have a conversation in the not-too-distant-future about signing him to an extension. There’s mutual interest in making it happen, so we’ll see kind of what that looks like if they can get to the finish line.”
With a relatively thin free agent market, Liljegren could try to explore the free agent market if the Capitals and his camp are unable to agree to terms on an extension.
In 47 games with the Sharks and Capitals this season, Liljegren registered one goal and 10 assists for 11 points, and 29 penalty minutes.
