Canadiens prospect Michael Hage earns ‘top-six’ NHL projection
Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Hage continues to generate excitement ahead of the 2026-27 NCAA season. Draft analyst Tony Ferrari said he believes the 20-year-old has the tools to become an impact NHL forward sooner rather than later.
Speaking on “The Sick Podcast” with Tony Marinaro, Ferrari praised the first-round pick’s ability to influence every area of the game.
“For me personally, it’s still Michael Hage,” Ferrari said when asked to name the Canadiens’ top prospect. “I think his ability to impact the game in so many ways is simply something that most teams don’t have in their prospect pool.”

Ferrari also highlighted Hage’s performance at the 2026 World Junior Championship.
“He was the best player for Canada on that team,” Ferrari said. “It wasn’t close, in my opinion. I think Zayne Parekh put up a ton of points. Gavin McKenna was obviously really good offensively, putting up production. But it was Michael Hage who drove everything for that team.
“That just kind of put on display what this kid can do when surrounded by elite, elite talent.”
Hage backed up that praise with production. He recorded 52 points in 39 games for Michigan while helping the Wolverines win the Big Ten title. He also led the World Juniors with 15 points in seven games and earned a place on the tournament’s All-Star Team.
The Canadiens selected Hage 21st overall in the 2024 NHL Draft. Montreal retains his signing rights through August 2028 after he decided to return to Michigan for another season.
Ferrari expects Hage to compete for an NHL roster spot once his college season ends. “He’s going to be a guy that, when he comes into the NHL, probably at the end of the season, depending on how long that Michigan season goes, could probably step into the lineup and be a legitimate top-six player,” Ferrari said.
The analyst said he believes Hage’s long-term future remains at center. “Long term, I do project him as a center,” Ferrari explained. “I think he works really well in the middle of the ice. He has excellent vision, and he facilitates things so well.”
Ferrari also acknowledged positional flexibility if needed. “The ultimate fallback is he’s a really, really solid top-six player,” he added.
Ferrari’s projection reflects Hage’s steady development rather than unrealistic expectations. His skating, hockey sense and playmaking already stand out against elite competition. Returning to Michigan should also provide another season of heavy responsibility before turning professional.

Montreal reached the Eastern Conference Final last season behind a young core led by Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield. That progress gives the organization patience with Hage’s development. If he continues producing at his current level, he could soon add another skilled center to one of the NHL’s strongest young talent pipelines.
