A young defenseman could become available on the trade market, as the Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly considering a trade involving Alexander Nikishin.

It was Darren Dreger who reported the information, and several teams have reportedly confirmed that the Hurricanes are evaluating their options.

Nikishin, 24, is a restricted free agent.

Carolina therefore finds itself at a crossroads, weighing market interest against the possibility of signing him to a lucrative contract extension.

It remains to be seen whether the Canadiens will show genuine interest. Trading an established defenseman like Guhle would represent a significant price to pay, and nothing currently suggests that Montreal is considering such a scenario. However, with an elite right-shot defenseman potentially available, it is certainly a situation worth monitoring for Kent Hughes.
