Canadiens announce death of Andre Pronovost
André Pronovost, the former Montreal Canadiens winger who won four consecutive Stanley Cups during one of the greatest dynasties in NHL history, has died per a team announcement. He was 90.
The Canadiens announced they learned of Pronovost’s death on Tuesday, September 8. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Born July 9, 1936, in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, Pronovost spent 10 seasons in the NHL, playing for the Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota North Stars.

Pronovost’s greatest success came at the beginning of his career in Montreal. He made his NHL debut with the Canadiens during the 1956-57 season and immediately became part of a championship team. Montreal won the Stanley Cup in each of his first four seasons, from 1957 through 1960, as the franchise built a dynasty that ultimately captured five straight championships.
In 557 regular-season NHL games, Pronovost recorded 198 points (94 goals, 104 assists). He added 22 points in 70 playoff games. With Montreal, he registered 109 points in 290 regular-season games, mostly as a fourth-line left wing.
Pronovost’s NHL career took him from Montreal to Boston and then Detroit before he was selected by the expansion Minnesota North Stars in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. He appeared in eight regular-season games and eight playoff games for Minnesota during the 1967-68 season, his final NHL campaign. He continued playing professionally in the minor leagues for several more years before retiring in 1972.

Anthony Mantha, Pronovost’s grandson, has played 11 NHL seasons with five different teams.
In an interview with NHL.com, Mantha recalled hearing stories about Pronovost’s years playing alongside legends such as Jean Béliveau, Maurice Richard and Gordie Howe.
Pronovost also attended the game in which Mantha scored his first NHL goal with the Detroit Red Wings in 2016.
