Maxime Truman has just shared a very interesting observation.

One of the biggest revelations from last season was undoubtedly goaltending coach Marco Marciano, who quite literally helped Jakub Dobes take off during the second half of the season (posting a .924 save percentage over his final 14 games).

And, of course, we all saw his performance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In short, it’s surprising to see that the Montreal Canadiens still haven’t offered Marciano a new contract, even though, in theory, it was expected to be nothing more than a formality.

Are the Canadiens planning to let him walk?

Not at all. And Max Truman appears to have an explanation.

The starting point is a little-known rule.

In theory, NHL team coaches are not allowed to work with NHL players during the summer.

However, Marco Marciano was indeed on the ice with Jacob Fowler over the past few hours:

And the Canadiens still have not officially announced a contract extension for their goaltending coach.

Is Marciano officially unemployed at the moment?

Has he been released from his contractual obligations with the team?

That would explain a lot.

Without an official connection to the club this summer, Marciano could work with the Canadiens’ goaltenders without violating that well-known rule.

Will Kent Hughes wait until training camp to officially sign Marco Marciano?

The Canadiens could simply wait until training camp to officially finalize a new contract with Marciano, allowing him to work freely with the team’s goaltenders throughout the summer.

“Officially, is Marciano currently unemployed? Are we going to wait until camp to announce a new contract?

That would allow Marciano to work with the Habs’ goalies during the summer…”

Let’s be honest, it would be extremely surprising if the Canadiens did not sign Marciano before the start of next season, considering the outstanding job he did in Montreal late last season after taking over for Éric Raymond.
