Sending Samuel Blais to waivers is not necessarily bad news, but rather a strategy by Kent Hughes ahead of the Olympic freeze.
As of tomorrow, the NHL shifts into Olympic break mode and a full transaction freeze comes into effect. This was the last possible moment to make a move.
If the organization wanted the Quebec native to stay in game shape, he had to be sent to the Laval Rocket today, plain and simple.
The forward hasn’t played many games over the past few weeks.
By sending him to the Laval Rocket, he’ll be able to play several games.
A Stanley Cup winner is joining the team to help show the way for the younger players.
Renaud Lavoie clarified the situation on X: officially, the move is meant to give him ice time in Laval during the break. It is not a disguised trade.

Laine and Newhook ready to return?
Laine’s shot could definitely help the Canadiens’ power play.
In Newhook’s case, his speed would also be a welcome addition for Martin St-Louis.
Finally, we’ll find out tomorrow whether Blais is claimed, and hopefully he remains within the Canadiens organization.
