Seguin season over, Stars can make major additions — The Fourth Period
Tyler Seguin’s season is over, as multiple reports indicate he will be shut down for the balance of the regular-season and playoffs, giving the Dallas Stars the opportunity to use his entire $9.85 million AAV and add a significant piece or two before next Friday’s trade deadline.
Stars GM Jim Nill has been scouring the league for a top-four right-shot defenceman and a top-six forward, potentially a centre. His search has been going on for a good chunk of the season and Dallas hopes to make a move or two over the next week.
While Seguin has already been placed on LTIR, the Stars have only been able to utilize part of his AAV against the cap. Once approved, they can use the full extent of his average salary.
The Stars were hopeful that Seguin would be back in the playoffs, but that unfortunately is no longer the case.
It is unclear whom Nill may focus on trying to acquire ahead of the deadline, but given the financial flexibility he now possesses, he can make multiple moves if he deems them necessary.
The Stars have been linked to such players as Calgary Flames forwards Blake Coleman and Nazem Kadri, Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers, St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn and defenceman Justin Faulk, Philadelphia Flyers blueliner Rasmus Ristolainen, and others.
