Montreal Canadiens Extend Mike Matheson | Inside The Rink

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that the’ve signed defenseman Mike Matheson to a five-year, $30 million extension with an AAV of $6 million per year. Matheson, 31, was in the final year of his current contract. In 22 games this season, he has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. He leads Montreal in ice time (24:50) and +/- (13). Matheson is one of four defensemen who have played in all 22 games this season. This is a solid signing by the Canadiens, as they lock up one of their leaders and an experienced defenseman, adding to the young defensemen in their system. With Matheson now extended, Arber Xhekaj is the only defenseman without a contract for next season.

The Pointe-Claire, Quebec, native is in his fourth season with the Canadiens. In 232 games with the Canadiens, he’s put up 29 goals and 112 assists for 141 points. Matheson has worn a letter with the Habs since the 2023-24 season. He had one assist during the the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Prior to joining the Canadiens, Matheson played for the Florida Panthers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Over the course of his 11-year career, he has 78 goals and 201 assists for 279 points in 649 games. In 25 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, Matheson has a goal and seven assists for eight points. Matheson has played in three World Championships with Team Canada (2016, 2017, 2024), where he’s put up three goals and 12 assists for 15 points in 18 games.
