Laughton, Leafs yet to dive into extension talks — The Fourth Period
The Toronto Maple Leafs have liked what they have seen from Scott Laughton since acquiring him ahead of last season’s trade deadline and the belief around the club is they will try to get him locked up to a new contract at some point.
So far, though, while there have been loose conversations, the two sides have yet to get into any “meaningful discussions” regarding a new deal, as TFP’s David Pagnotta reported Monday on Leafs Morning Take, and noted that “Scott Laughton’s a player they need to figure out how to keep.”
Laughton, 31, is in the final year of a five-year, $15 million contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
“They have not had any meaningful discussions or negotiations with respect to an extension,” Pagnotta said. “I think there’s an understanding that they would like to have those discussions. He’s already proven to be a glue guy in the room … but they haven’t had those in-depth contract discussions yet with his camp.”
It is unclear as to the type of contract Laughton may be looking for, but another multi-year, mid-term deal is likely no matter where he signs.
Laughton’s presence on and off the ice has been complimented by the media and his teammates and the energy he brings during games has been a highlight of his season, to date.
In 34 games with the Leafs so far this season, Laughton has scored eight goals and added two assists, along with 10 penalty minutes.
