The Washington Capitals have traded veteran defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks in a surprise move just hours before Anaheim faces the Montreal Canadiens.
It’s quite a changing of the guard for the Capitals organization, which loses its general on the blue line.
In return for the 36-year-old defenseman, Washington acquires a conditional 2026 first-round pick. They also add a third-round selection for the 2027 draft.
Carlson is an institution with the Caps. With 15 seasons of NHL experience, he leaves a massive hole in Spencer Carbery’s lineup.
The Massachusetts native brought consistent offensive production with his quick breakout. We’re talking about a player who was still logging more than 25 minutes of ice time per game this season.
Ducks land John Carlson in major trade before matchup with the Montreal Canadiens
For the Ducks, it’s a clear message sent to the rest of the league. They want to surround their young prospects with high-level leadership to accelerate their rebuild.
Is the return enough for a defenseman of this caliber? It’s a fair question, since draft picks are always a bet on the future.
The first-round pick is conditional, which adds a layer of uncertainty to this transaction.
Washington appears ready to clear house to drastically rejuvenate its defensive corps.
We know the salary cap played a major role in this situation. Carlson carried a significant salary that limited the team’s options to shop in the market next summer.
Simply put, the Metropolitan Division has just lost one of its best defensemen. Fans in Washington may find this a tough pill to swallow this morning.
Let’s be honest, seeing Carlson wear a jersey other than the Capitals’ will take some getting used to. It’s officially the end of an era for the franchise.
With the Canadiens facing the Ducks tonight, the spotlight is not only on the ice but also on the front office. With the trade deadline set for Friday at 3 p.m., the question remains whether Kent Hughes will make a major move of his own.
