David Savard still has the CH tattooed on his heart. The former defenseman, who hung up his skates after the 2025 playoffs, is no longer hiding his desire to return to the game.

On JiC’s show Wednesday, the most beloved bearded man in Montreal sent a clear message to Kent Hughes. “I’d definitely love to get a call,” he said bluntly.

The team is currently fighting for a playoff spot, and the atmosphere of meaningful games is starting to seriously miss him. We can agree that his leadership is sorely missed in the locker room at times.

Currently serving as a mentor with the Quebec Remparts, Savard already envisions himself blocking shots in the playoffs with Montreal. He has even started skating again recently in Brossard.

The defensive corps could benefit from an experienced right-shot veteran to stabilize the play. Savard knows the system by heart and wouldn’t cost much against the salary cap.

At 35 years old, he has played more than 900 NHL games, including the playoffs. His last contract carried an average annual value of $3.5 million.

David Savard openly pushes for a return to the Montreal Canadiens

“I’d definitely love to get a call, to be that big right-shot defenseman who blocks shots and to experience the playoffs a second time [with the Canadiens],” he replied after a few seconds of silence. “Of course I’m going to miss it a lot, but for now… things are looking good for the team and we’ll see what they decide to do.”

Should Kent Hughes make a move to bring his former blue-line general back? The question is being seriously asked as the playoff race heats up.

Savard finished the 2024-2025 season with tremendous experience, but above all, he has maintained excellent physical condition.

A low-cost signing would allow for a quick boost to the team’s defensive depth.

A guy who wants to play that badly for the logo is rare. Now it remains to be seen whether the Canadiens prefer to rely on youth or on Savard’s experience.

The matter is now in management’s hands.
