The Canadiens could definitely use another big, right-hand shot on defence and another big, top-six forward, but those types of players come with a big price in return. The Canadiens also only have US$1.422 million in current salary-cap space, according to PuckPedia.com. Hughes would love to trade Patrik Laine and what’s left of his US$8.7-million salary, but would probably have to eat half of it in order to make that happen. Hughes has given Laine’s agent permission to speak with other teams to try to work out a trade.
