Canucks trade Hughes to Wild in blockbuster — The Fourth Period
The Vancouver Canucks have traded captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild in a blockbuster move.
Heading to Vancouver are centre Marco Rossi, defenceman Zeev Buium, left wing Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round draft pick.
“Quinn is a great person, a great player, and one of the greatest Canucks of all time,” said Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford. “With the circumstances surrounding JT and now Quinn, we are fortunate to acquire these very good young players from Minnesota. They will be a key part of the rebuild that we are currently in, giving us a bright future moving forward. The hockey club will continue to build with talented young players using that as a blueprint to become a contender sooner rather than later.”
Hughes, 26, had two goals and 21 assists for 23 points in 26 games with the Canucks this season.
In 459 career NHL regular-season games with the Canucks, Hughes recorded 61 goals and 371 assists for 432 points, along with 187 penalty minutes.
Drafted seventh-overall by the Canucks in the 2018 NHL Draft, Hughes has one more year remaining on his contract after this season.
“Quinn played hard, lead by example and did a lot of very good things for the Canucks,” said Canucks GM Patrik Allvin. “Trading away a player of this caliber is never an easy decision to make, but it was one we had to do to make our team better. We are so excited to add a solid centre in Marco, a good young blueliner in Zeev and a versatile forward in Liam. This year’s draft is a strong one so acquiring a first-round pick was also a big part of this deal.”
Rossi, 24, tallied four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 17 games with the Wild this season.
Drafted ninth overall by Minnesota in the 2022 NHL Draft, Rossi has registered 49 goals and 65 assists for 114 points in 202 career NHL regular-season games, to date.
Buium, 20, picked up three goals and 11 assists in 31 games with the Wild this season, his first full season in the NHL. He was drafted 12th overall by the Wild in the 2024 NHL Draft.
Ohgren, 21, skated in 21 games with the Wild this season, registering no points and a minus-3 rating. He was selected 19th overall by the Wild in the 2022 NHL Draft.
