The dust has barely settled on the trade deadline, and we are finally starting to understand what was going on inside the Canadiens’ offices.
Let’s be honest: Kent Hughes did not sit idle, even if he ultimately kept his cards very close to his chest.
The Nashville Predators forward is having a tremendous season with 22 goals and 59 points in 61 games played.
With a +8 rating and surgical efficiency in the faceoff circle, he would have been the perfect asset to strengthen the center position.
The situation was complicated because Nashville is still fighting for a playoff spot with a record of 28-26-8.
On top of that, O’Reilly appears attached to his musical hometown, even though Barry Trotz listened to offers right up until the last minute.
Chris Johnston: Ryan O’Reilly was out there today, finally the Predators were willing to move him, they couldn’t get the price they wanted.
A busy summer ahead for Patrik Laine?
The other big rumor generating buzz involves Patrik Laine’s role in discussions aimed at freeing up salary cap space.
The sniper has had a difficult season, appearing in only 5 games before going down with an injury.
Montreal currently holds a record of 33-18-9, which places the team 4th in the Atlantic Division.
We will see whether this situation resurfaces in June during the draft, but the plan remains clear: add leadership without wrecking the future.
It is frustrating for fans who wanted action, but patience appears to be the guiding principle for the Montreal Canadiens.
