Canadiens goalie prospect Yevgeni Volokhin rewriting records in Russia at age 20

The Montreal Canadiens may have a hidden gem in Russia as 2023 fifth-round pick Yevgeni Volokhin draws attention by rewriting VHL records at just 20 years old.
Volokhin has already surpassed the mark of six shutouts for a goaltender under 21 in this circuit. The previous holder of that record was none other than Rangers star Igor Shesterkin.
It is fair to say his current statistics are surprising. The young prospect holds a 23-10-5 record, along with a 1.60 goals-against average.
His .946 save percentage is particularly impressive for an athlete of his age. Across the entire VHL, only Flyers prospect Yegor Zavragin has posted a better rate, but in just 15 games played.
Yevgeni Volokhin could surprise with the Canadiens
The Canadiens appear to have made a strong pick by selecting this goaltender late in the draft. His steady progression in such a high-level professional league confirms his status as a top prospect for the organization.
Last July, Volokhin traveled to take part in the development camp in Brossard. His appearance left a positive impression despite the language barrier with the coaching staff.
However, patience will be required since his contract in Russia runs until 2028. The plan is clear: he intends to make the move to North America as soon as that deal expires.
Until then, the Canadiens’ staff will continue to monitor his performances closely. With such potential, the future in goal for Montreal appears to be in very good hands.
