The Montreal Canadiens’ defense needs reinforcements before the trade deadline, and Rasmus Ristolainen’s name is circulating heavily across the NHL.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound defenseman would bring a physical dimension that is sorely lacking in Martin St-Louis’ lineup.
Kent Hughes appears intent on stabilizing his blue line with a veteran capable of logging heavy minutes.
Ristolainen is currently carrying a $5.1 million cap hit per season and will become a free agent in a year and a half.
He is not an offensive dynamo, but his physical presence and steady execution in his own zone appeal to management.
The right-shot defenseman also represented Finland at the most recent Olympic Games alongside young Oliver Kapanen.
His arrival would finally balance the pairings with three regular right-shot and three left-shot defensemen.
The asking price from the Philadelphia Flyers will be the determining factor. If the acquisition cost is reasonable, adding this large-bodied defender would significantly alter the look of Montreal’s defense.
A major trade before the deadline
The Canadiens have struggled to find stability in the sixth defenseman role since the beginning of the season.
Acquiring a veteran like Ristolainen would help protect the young prospects pushing from behind.
This would not be a short-term fix, as the Finnish blueliner remains under contract for next season.
It is the type of asset that helps a rebuild take the next step.
If not him, Kent Hughes will pursue a similar profile elsewhere in the league. The loss of depth with the Laval Rocket is forcing the Montreal general manager’s hand.
The objective is clear: neutralize opposing attacks with greater physicality. Ristolainen recently finished games with a -3 rating, but his value extends beyond traditional statistics.
