A new twist in the story between Alex Kovalev and the Montreal Canadiens is intriguing fans and putting his unique legacy at the Bell Centre back in the spotlight.

The former forward seems to believe that the current context does not allow him to accept this special request from the Canadiens. And no, this offer is not to coach, but to organize a tribute night for him.

Let’s be honest: number 27 marked the club’s history with his unique style and presence at the Bell Centre. It creates a lot of nostalgia among Canadiens fans.

This request came directly from upper management and aimed to highlight the impact he had on the city and the fanbase. But against all expectations, Kovalev unfortunately had to refuse-neither out of disrespect nor lack of love for Montreal.

It is rather a question of timing with his current job.

“Alex Kovalev confirms that Geoff Molson and the Canadiens offered to organize a night in his honour, like Andrei Markov next week, but he politely declined.”

A refusal tied to his current role and today’s priorities

Since he works as a coach in the KHL, he is not free to move as he wishes. He cannot leave his team in the middle of the season. Imagine if St-Louis missed a few games behind the bench to be honored in Tampa.

Despite everything, he added that he found the proposal very touching.

“I have a job to do here, and it’s very important to me. I can’t leave in the middle of the season,” he said last week, before the news about his departure from Spartak became public. “Geoff Molson told me, ‘It would be great if you came’ It’s very nice, but now is not the time.”

He also spoke, of course, about Ivan Demidov, a topic he follows closely. According to Kovalev, the talent is there, but the efficiency must follow.

“A talented player will always find a way to score goals and put up points. He plays an exciting style, and Montreal loves that, but he also needs to produce – score more goals, get points.”

“At this moment, I’d choose efficiency. Between Demidov and Schaefer, I would pick the Islanders defenseman. He’s taking on leadership responsibilities and huge minutes, which is very important. He has that young confidence that says: ‘This is my spot, and I’m not giving it up.'”

I think this very demanding perspective shows how seriously he takes his role as a coach and why he refuses to leave his club, even for a tribute night.

He maintains a deep loyalty to his players. Even if he is refusing for now, Kovalev assures that the idea is not dead.

When the stars align, he would be ready to return to Montreal for a night that reflects who he is.

Many fans already hope to see number 27 again at the Bell Centre.
