Canadiens could land Chris Kreider as Mike Rupp highlights Montreal fit

Chris Kreider is suddenly back on the NHL free-agent market, and the Montreal Canadiens have emerged as an intriguing landing spot. Mike Rupp thinks that Montreal could make sense for the veteran winger as he weighs his next move.

Speaking on Daily Faceoff’s “Tri-State Hockey Podcast,” Jonny Lazarus called Kreider an “automatic 20 goals” player. Rupp agreed Montreal fits, especially if Kreider wants to return to the Eastern Conference and join a contender.

“Boston’s going to be that one that is going to throw a wrench in any of our predictions, I think,” Rupp said. “But if you’re talking, getting back to the East, wanting to win, I mean honestly, and Arthur touched on it, the relationships, I mean Montreal makes a ton of sense for me.

“So that would be the one for me. That’s where I would like to see him go.”

Kreider became an unrestricted free agent after the Anaheim Ducks terminated his contract. The 35-year-old cleared unconditional waivers after Anaheim needed salary-cap flexibility.

The veteran scored 22 goals and 50 points in 75 games last season. He also added seven points in 12 playoff games.

Montreal has reasons to consider adding another proven scoring winger. The Canadiens finished with 106 points last season and reached the Eastern Conference Final before losing to Carolina.

Kreider would bring size, playoff experience and net-front ability to a young lineup. He has also scored at least 20 goals in 11 NHL seasons, giving Montreal a reliable offensive option.

The fit also makes sense because Montreal’s window has clearly opened. Rupp’s point about relationships matters because Kreider reportedly wants to remain closer to the East Coast and his family.

“It feels like getting back home is where a lot of players want to be, and that would fit that void,” Rupp said.
