Formenton Signing Surprises Insider

The Edmonton Oilers signed Alex Formenton to a one-year contract worth $850,000, but the move immediately generated discussion because of his involvement in the case involving five players from the 2018 Hockey Canada team. Formenton addressed the reaction Wednesday, calling his return to the NHL a process and saying he was grateful for the opportunity.

Elliotte Friedman said he wasn’t particularly surprised that Formenton eventually returned to the NHL after being reinstated by Hockey Canada. What caught him off guard was that Formenton would choose to play in Canada and that a Canadian team would sign him.

Friedman noted the backlash surrounding Cal Foote’s attempted return to Europe and said he never expected to see one of the five players return to the NHL with a Canadian organization. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug cited Stan Bowman, who noted that Hockey Canada’s recent support for reinstatement was a factor. 

“I think that played a big role for us in our decision-making. They were certainly the closest to this; they had the most information, so for them to single Alex out as the one deserving of reinstatement immediately, we did feel like that played a large role.”

Another interesting detail about the Oilers’ signing was that the club apparently did not need NHL approval to bring Formenton back.

Hellebuyck Trade Gets a Deadline?

Connor Hellebuyck’s future with the Winnipeg Jets continues to be one of the biggest unresolved stories heading into training camp. Friedman said he feels bad for everyone involved, including Hellebuyck, the Jets organization, and their fans.

Friedman believes circumstances beyond Winnipeg’s control following last season have made the situation particularly difficult. Hellebuyck’s preferred destinations are reportedly broader than some other recent star trade requests, although Canadian teams are not believed to be included.

Friedman believes Winnipeg understands it ultimately has to complete the trade and there is no going back now. These two are headed for a split, and it’s a matter of where and which team has the assets to get a deal done. It doesn’t sound like the New Jersey Devils are as interested as originally reported.

Hughes Gives Definitive Statement on His Negotiations

Quinn Hughes isn’t giving the Minnesota Wild any reason to believe an extension is imminent. Speaking at the NHL Player Media Tour, Hughes made it clear that he isn’t feeling pressured to get a deal done before training camp.

“This is going to be done whenever I feel like it needs to be done,” Hughes said, adding that he wants to take his time and make a decision that is good for everyone. He also said he doesn’t feel backed into a corner and plans to remain in communication with GM Bill Guerin.

There is also speculation Hughes could be watching what happens with Detroit’s Dylan Larkin, who has been linked to Minnesota. For now, Hughes appears determined to keep his options open.
