NHL re-draft confirms Kent Hughes and the Canadiens struck gold with a top-10 player

Scott Wheeler, The Athletic’s respected prospect analyst, has published an intriguing new piece involving the Montreal Canadiens.
In short, he decided to revisit the 2023 NHL Draft to see what a new ranking would look like today.
In other words, if the draft were held today, in what (new) order would the players selected in 2023 be drafted?
The top of the draft, however, remains unchanged.
It’s a group of players Kent Hughes would undoubtedly have loved to draft.
The Canadiens were selecting fifth overall at the time, immediately after that elite group.
That’s where the changes begin.
A selection that would still have plenty of supporters today.
Michkov was the preferred choice of many observers at the time, and the debate remains alive three years later.
Kent Hughes and the Canadiens pulled off a steal with Jacob Fowler
It is probably the steal of the 2023 NHL Draft.
Fowler jumps from 69th overall to 10th overall. That’s an incredible rise.
Instead, the Austrian lands at 16th overall, which is still higher than many might expect.
All forwards, which isn’t surprising.
That draft class lacked high-end defensemen, and Jacob Fowler has clearly established himself as the top goaltender of the group.
