Many fans dream of seeing the Xhekaj brothers together in the NHL for good.
But Florian, the younger of the two, has not yet earned a full-time spot with the Montreal Canadiens.
Many expected the Canadiens’ need for more toughness on the fourth line to work in Florian’s favor. Not so fast.
Grant McCagg, a former Montreal Canadiens scout, broke down Florian’s final two playoff games with the Laval Rocket.
His verdict was clear: several aspects of Florian’s game still need to improve.
The first concern McCagg pointed out was his lack of speed, a significant issue for a young player hoping to play center in the NHL.
McCagg also highlighted another recurring issue.
Florian finishes his checks, but he too often ends up out of position because he is chasing big hits at all costs.
Grant McCagg already believes Florian Xhekaj should begin next season with the Laval Rocket
The comparison to his older brother is inevitable.
As for Florian, his penalty minutes also deserve some context.
In eight playoff games with the Rocket, he recorded 34 penalty minutes, including 20 that came from two game misconducts.
Contrary to his reputation, he does not actually drop the gloves that often.
According to McCagg, most of his penalties stem from undisciplined play rather than actual fights.
Still, there is plenty to like.
Florian delivers crushing body checks and brings outstanding intensity on the forecheck.
One detail makes him especially valuable. The Rocket uses him in every situation, both on the power play and the penalty kill.
He has also proven to be surprisingly reliable in his own zone.
He uses his stick intelligently, breaks up plays, and has a heavy, accurate shot.
A future in the NHL is certainly not out of the question for Florian, but not this season. According to the former Canadiens scout, he still has significant development ahead of him.
Now it’s up to him to improve his speed and decision-making if he wants to join his brother in the NHL.
