Canadiens sign restricted free agent Brett Berard to two-way deal
The Montreal Canadiens have signed restricted free agent forward Brett Berard to a one-year, two-way deal.
Berard was acquired by the Habs from the New York Rangers on the eve of the NHL Draft on June 26. The Canadiens sent back defenceman William Trudeau in exchange for the 23-year-old.
A native of Providence, R.I., Berard has played 48 career NHL games for the Rangers, collecting 10 points. The Blueshirts selected Berard in the fifth round (134th pick) in 2020.
The 5-foot-9, 175-pound forward had 22 points in 41 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack this past season.
With Berard crossed off the list, the Canadiens have seven remaining restricted free agents, notably Arber Xhekaj, Zachary Bolduc and Kirby Dach. Dach filed for salary arbitration.
At the minor-league level, the Canadiens have forwards Jared Davidson, Sean Farrell, Hunter McKown, as well as recently acquired defenceman Maksymilian Szuber left unsigned.
