Montreal Canadiens Extend Dobes Three Years, $16 Million
On Thursday afternoon, the Montreal Canadiens announced that they signed goaltender Jakub Dobes to a three-year contract extension $16,072,725 contract extension with a salary cap hit of $5,357,575 per season. Dobes has another year left on a contract that carries a $965,000 AAV for the 2026-27 campaign.

The Montreal Canadiens goalie earned himself a huge pay raise after he won the starting job from Samuel Montembeault earlier this past season and then led the Canadiens to Game 5 of the 2026 Eastern Conference Final. During the regular season, Dobes posted a 29-10-4 record with a .901 save percentage and 2.78 GAA in 43 games. However, his game really took off after the Olympic break, where he went on an 11-5-0 run with a .916 save percentage and 2.49 GAA in the final 16 regular season games.
From there he took his game to the next level and was easily the Canadiens’ best performer during the postseason. In 19 playoff games, Dobes may have had a losing record of 9-10, but he was the reason the Canadiens got all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals as he posted a. 908 save percentage and 2.66 GAA. That once again doesn’t tell the full story, as he led all netminders in saves above expected throughout the postseason with a total of 13.3 saves above expected.

His best moment all season had to be Game 7 of the 1st Round against the Tampa Bay Lightning, when the Canadiens got dominated 29-9 in shots, but thanks to Dobes’ brilliant play, they were able to be opportunistic and win 2-1 to eliminate their more experienced opponents. In that game, Dobes stood on his head to carry his team into the 2nd round, where he continued to face obstacles but would pull through. The Habs needed him most in another Game 7. If anything, these playoffs proved that Dobes really deserved the raise that he is getting.

At the end of the season, it was revealed that Dobes came in 4th in Calder Trophy voting for Rookie of the Year (playing only 16 games the year before kept the netminder eligible). Dobes proved that he deserves to be treated like a starting goaltender and will now be paid like a mid-tier starter in the NHL as of the 2027-28 campaign; looking at Sportac, he will be the 20th highest-paid netminder when the contract kicks in. If Dobes can play to the level that he played this past season, this contract could also end up being a steal as the Canadiens enter their years of Stanley Cup contention with what appears to be their clear #1 goaltender for the next 4 years on a team-friendly deal.
