Makar extension a priority for Avalanche — The Fourth Period
The Colorado Avalanche have admitted what we all expected: signing superstar defenceman Cale Makar is their top priority this off-season.
Makar, 27, is entering the final year of his current contract, which comes with a $7 million average annual value, and is eligible to sign an extension July 1.
TFP’s David Pagnotta reported this week that Makar’s camp and Avalanche President and acting GM Joe Sakic have had loose conversations about what a new deal may look like, but actual negotiations aren’t expected to start until later this summer.
“Cale’s going to finish his career here,” Sakic told reporters earlier today. “I’ve already talked to his agent, we’re confident that something’s going to get worked out at some point. He’s got another year, but this summer we expected to have him signed.”
Makar’s next contract could make him the highest paid player in the NHL, which would result in his AAV surpassing $17 million per season, and his final number may double his current one.
After putting up back-to-back 90+ point seasons, Makar registered 20 goals and 59 assists for 79 points in 75 games with the Avs this season.
