NHL revises Sabres’ Alex Lyon’s Game 6 stat line after Canadiens’ early scoring surge

The NHL changed an official decision after Game 6 between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres last night at the Bell Centre.

That also meant goaltender Lyon finished the game having allowed three goals on three shots (no saves), which would have placed him at the top of NHL history for the worst performance in a potential elimination game.

But during the intermission, the NHL ultimately decided to change its official ruling.

A statistical change that slightly changes the perception of the Sabres goaltender’s performance, at least from a historical standpoint.

Journalist Paul Hamilton also confirmed the change.

It is the kind of detail that may seem insignificant but actually changes a lot.

According to the new official statistic, Lyon made the first save of the night on Ivan Demidov’s shot.

And then, he allowed three goals on the next three shots by Canadiens players.

It still remains a catastrophic start to the game for the Sabres goaltender, but he is no longer the worst in history.

In any case, nobody expects to see Lyon back in net during this second-round series.

And the team never managed to regain momentum for the rest of the game!

Lyon can also thank Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for stepping in and stabilizing the game before things became even more embarrassing for Buffalo.

For the decisive Game 7 on Monday night, all indications suggest Ruff will continue with Luukkonen.
