Canadiens fall to Sabres in Game 4, series tied at 2-2
After losing the past two games in one-sided fashion, the Sabres responded with a series-tying 3-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4 on Tuesday at Bell Centre.
Buffalo’s Zach Benson, celebrating his 21st birthday, scored the winner on the power play in the third period.
Tage Thompson tied it at 2-2 with a bizarre power-play goal in the second period. The Sabres star dumped it to the corner boards, only to see it take a crazy bounce and get behind Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes.
The Canadiens led 2-1 after the first period on goals by Alex Newhook and Cole Caufield.
Buffalo thought it had went in front 2-0 after a review showed Dobes had gloved Jack Quinn’s shot when the puck was past the goal line, but Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis immediately challenged for goaltender interference and was successful.
Mattias Samuelsson opened the scoring for Buffalo.
The Sabres made a goaltending change for Game 4, going with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen after Alex Lyon had started the previous seven games.
The series shifts back to Buffalo for Game 5 on Thursday.
