“When I see people using Mike Matheson’s mistake to claim that Martin St-Louis would have punished and publicly criticized Arber Xhekaj for the same thing, one question keeps echoing in my mind: «are you serious?»

It’s completely absurd to compare a player who gives you 25 minutes of ice time per game and has delivered so many key points to a player who plays 8-9 minutes every other game. Of course-and it’s mathematical-the risk of mistakes is much higher in Mike Matheson’s case.

Did Matheson make a mistake? Should he have gone behind his net with the puck? Yes.

But if Matheson isn’t on this team, the Canadiens are not in the playoffs right now.

And by the way, why is it acceptable to go after Matheson for a late-game mistake, while when Lane Hutson makes a mistake on the Ducks’ game-winning goal, nobody talks about it?

Questioning a player’s entire value based on one play is unfortunate.”
