The transition from a junior league to the NCAA isn’t an easy one as it’s a big jump. Especially if a player decides to go through with their commitment midseason. That’s exactly what Tynan Lawrence did in his draft year and while it was a surprise, his transition has been a decent one after he was starting to heat up in the USHL with the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

After almost being a point per game (54 in 56) last season, Lawrence went on to tear up the post season with 18 points in 14 games. This season, he did miss some time due to an injury, but when he returned, he picked up where he left off with 10 goals and 17 points in 13 games. Making the jump to the NCAA, Lawrence’s production hasn’t quite popped off, but his overall play has been impressive as there are aspects to his game that stood out.

Lawrence’s intelligence, compete and work ethic hasn’t missed a beat since transitioning to college. He displays that winning mindset every time he steps on the ice. He’s not flashy, but it’s the little things he does that stands out. He has great attention to detail, is always in the right place at the right time positionally, displays strong hockey sense and the ability to step up and anticipate plays. Even though the points haven’t been there, he does a great job to generate and create plays; be it off rush chances, cycle plays or setting up a forecheck in the attacking zone. He plays a power game, but is a facilitator and creator when he’s on the ice and the results show.

Lawrence provides great awareness and support with his play off the puck. He has great habits defensively, helping on backchecks, taking away passing lanes to intercept plays and showing the physicality and mindset to win battles to regain possession. He’s unrelenting when it comes to puck battles as he will do whatever it takes to get control of the puck. He doesn’t cheat on plays and doesn’t force anything if it isn’t there, showing great patience and timing.

Lawrence is a very smooth and agile skater, showing great speed and control in transition. He can look to getting quicker with his first few steps, when he does reach his top speed, he’s extremely tough to contain and hold back. He’s always pushing to the middle with his playmaking, feathering pucks on odd-man rushes and getting pucks off in high traffic situations. He has a strong shot and release and does a good job to work give-and-go plays in order to be a finishing option. He’s always attacking the middle in order to get those great looks and release shots when he can.

Tynan Lawrence- NHL Draft Projection

There was some doubt about Lawrence’s projection after a slow start to his NCAA career. However, that seems to be in the past as he’s more than likely to be a top-10 selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. Some outlets have him as high as fourth overall, which is fair given his skillset. Even he doesn’t crack the top-five, he won’t have to wait long to hear his name called.

Quotables

“He’s on pucks, he’s got a good stick (and) when he’s moving his feet, he’s hard to handle. I thought that was the type of play he’s going to make — create a turnover and make a nice pass to the slot.” – Jay Pandolfo, Boston Terriers head coach

“He’s admittedly not the most dynamic puckhandler. Instead, he relies on intelligent reads, recognizing when to attack open space and executing clever passes under pressure, using an array of soft chips, aerial feeds, and smart banks off the boards.” – Ryan Ma, Dobber Prospects

“He’s a threat in transition with the puck on his stick and sees the ice exceptionally well. When he moves the play to a linemate his ability to keep his feet moving and find open ice in high danger areas speaks to his hockey sense. He has top-six NHL upside.” – Jason Bukala, Sportsnet

“He’s a detailed and intelligent center with great instincts and supports teammates well. Lawrence is committed to playing defense, working off puck and tracking back to kill odd man rushes and disrupting opponents in transition.” – Spoked Z, SMAHT Scouting

Strengths

  • High end compete and motor
  • Excellent 200-foot game
  • IQ and attention to detail
  • Strong transitional game and speed
  • Quality generator for chances

Under Construction- Improvements to Make

  • Continue to find consistency at higher level
  • Quicker with first few steps

NHL Potential

Lawrence has the label of a second line centre, that can be reliable in any situation. He’s an absolute monster at five-on-five while also being a threat on the power play and penalty kill. His smarts and awareness alone make him a centre that teams would love to have on their roster and piece that can be a contributing factor sooner than later. The offensive consistency needs to show and elevate against tougher competition, but I believe that will come in time as he already has some of that experience under his belt.

Risk- Reward Analysis

Risk- 1/5, Reward 4/5

Fantasy Hockey Potential

Offense- 7.5/10, Defense 7.5/10

Awards/ Achievements

Lawrence won a bronze medal for Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup to start his draft season. Last season, he won the Clark Cup in the USHL as well as the MVP for the playoffs. He was named to the USHL All-Rookie Team and won a gold medal for Canada at the U17 Challenge.
