A historic moment unfolded Saturday at the Bell Centre: for the first time in 13 NHL seasons, Brendan Gallagher was a healthy scratch from the Montreal Canadiens lineup.
Martin St-Louis admitted the discussion was particularly emotional. The coach even acknowledged that it was probably harder for him to deliver the news than for Gally to accept it.
The Montreal Canadiens head coach emphasized the exemplary professionalism of his number 11. The veteran took the news without complaint, putting the needs of the team ahead of his ego.
Gallagher also proved his commitment during Saturday morning’s practice. He was the first player to jump onto the ice to break a sweat with his teammates.
Montreal holds a 36-18-10 record for 82 points in the standings. With that total, the team sits third in the Atlantic Division after 64 games played.
The decision comes as Cole Caufield returns to the offensive lineup. The current depth is forcing Martin St-Louis to make difficult choices to maintain strong execution.
A return expected as soon as Sunday against the Ducks
“I’m pretty sure he took it better than me. It’s not easy, considering all he’s represented to the Canadiens over the years. But it’s where we’re at in the schedule, with our depth. We’ll move forward, continue to evaluate, and Gally is a pro.”
Gallagher’s stint in the stands will be short-lived. He will be back in uniform tomorrow to face the Anaheim Ducks.
This rotation allows the 33-year-old veteran to stay fresh for the remainder of the weekend. The goal is to ensure everyone maintains consistent offensive impact during the playoff race.
The Canadiens have scored 228 goals this season while allowing 212. Every point is crucial to maintain this three-point lead over the Detroit Red Wings.
Gally understands his role in this rebuild that is progressing rapidly. His exemplary reaction will serve as a lesson to the young prospects in the locker room for the rest of the season.
